How Much Should You Spend on Your Wedding?

I recently saw a thread on a forum about people spending tens of thousands of pounds on their wedding. There does seem to be a big move into spending a large amount on one day. To some that’s stupid but to others it’s their dream.

How much should you spend on your wedding?

Honestly, I believe it should be as cheap or as expensive as you’d like. Okay, so you can’t do it for free, but you don’t need to spends thousands if you don’t want. There are low-cost venue options and you can keep the guest list to the bare minimum. If you don’t want Great-Aunt Dot at your wedding day then there’s no need to invite her (unless of course Great-Aunt Dot is like your mother and is paying for the wedding).

We didn’t want to spend a fortune. We had a small budget, with most of it going on the venue and food. We found a cheaper wedding photographer, I got my wedding dress off eBay, and some of the additions were gifts from some of the guests.

That being said…if you want to spend £20,000 on your big day (and can afford it) then why not go for it? This is your wedding. You only want to do it once, right? Well, it needs to be done the way that you want. Don’t pay attention to those who find the amount absurd and ludicrous. Most people are just jealous that you have this money to burn.

What I will say is don’t get into debt because of your wedding. If you can’t afford to do it big, then opt for a party at a later date. You can save up to throw a flashy party at your 5-year or 10-year anniversary. Or have a 5-year-long engagement to save up for the wedding in the way that you want to do it.

There’s no set amount that your wedding should cost. It all depends on what you want from your day and the amount you can realistically afford.
