How Much Will Being a Wedding Guest Cost?
As you hit your 20s, you tend to get more wedding invites than at any other time in your life. We all know that planning a wedding can be a pricey thing – most venues now will cost at least £3000! – but just being a guest can be pricey.
After talking to a few friends, and also checking the costs of the weddings that I've attended, here is a list of the usual costs.
How to Beat the Cost of Being the Wedding Guest
While wedding gifts, travel and accommodation costs are unavoidable, there are a few areas that are optional or able to double up for other weddings or events; the outfit for example. Travel and hotel costs may of course vary, depending on how far you have to travel and whether you can find a cheaper for of accommodation – maybe you can stay at a cheaper B&B rather than the expensive hotel your friends have chosen to have their wedding at.
Another way to make things a little cheaper is to share costs with friends or your partner. If there are four of you, you could drive and split the petrol cost, which nine times out of 10 works out cheaper than all four of you traveling by car. As a couple, you could share the cost of accommodation and the wedding gift. However, bear in mind that you may double your expenditure on outfits, hair cuts etc.
Tips to be Ready to be a Wedding Guest
If you know you have a friend's wedding coming up, then plan now. Here are a few tips to help you not just cut down the cost but to be ready for the cost of being a guest.
Decide on a budget that you can spend on the wedding. How much of that budget will be spent on the gifts? How much will you need for travel and accommodation?
Don't be afraid to be honest if you can't afford to attend the stag do or hen night. If they're true friends, then they will understand if you don't have the money for nights like that so that you can come to their wedding.
Check your wardrobe since it's likely that you will already have something in there that you can wear to a wedding. Most people will have something that is wedding suitable after all. If you have the budget to buy and really want something new, rather than going for a new dress, opt for a new pair of shoes to match that dress or even a new necklace to accompany it. If you really don't have something suitable, then when shopping buy something that you can use more than once, something that isn't easily dated.
Remember that when a friend or relative asks you to attend his or her wedding, it is for your company and not for the gifts. Don't put more pressure on yourself and don't stretch yourself too far.
