How to Get a Cheap Photographer

Because my partner and I are on a tight budget for our wedding, we had to look for a budget photographer. Luckily for us, I have friends who are training to be professional photographers and they were the first port of call for me but not everyone has this option. Here are a few tips on how you can get a cheap wedding photographer.

Look for Photography Students

Looking out for photography students is the first place to start. Students often need the experience in the professional environment and your wedding could be perfect for them. On top of that, because they are still learning, there can't really charge that much.

There is an element of risk when it comes to student photographers; they are still learning so the quality will not be as good as a professional wedding photographer. However, while learning, they will find out the tricks and tips to get the quality of the photos perfect and they can ask their teachers for help if they need it. My advice is to check for the quality of the student photographer before you hire them - ask for previous work and samples, especially wedding shots if they have done them.

Look for Someone Branching into Wedding Photography

Another option is to look at those who are trying to branch out. Wedding photography is an extremely competitive business so any experience to get started is always useful. Those branching out into this type of photography will often work for a small price since they will be inexperienced in the area.

While the photographers will be inexperienced when it comes to weddings, they will have experience in the photography market. There are fewer risks than hiring a student to do your shots for your big day. However, they will charge a little more than a student due to that extra experience.

Talk to a Friend

If you know someone who does photography, then it is worth talking to them. They may offer a discount since they are your friend - some will even do it as a wedding present for you. If you don't have a friend who is a photographer, talk to your other friends; there is usually someone who knows someone who will be able to help you.

Of course, you need to check samples of anyone that you find. There is a big risk in not checking samples first. You should also ask about the copyright of the photos. Some photographers will choose to keep copyright while others will give that to you. A wedding photographer keeping copyright could be a major problem in the future if you want to make copies or use the photographs for Christmas cards or something similar.

The above are just three options available to you when it comes to finding a cheap photographer. Wedding photography is an art and there is a reason why companies will charge large amounts - their time, running of their equipment and the development of the photos are just some of those reasons. Sometimes, it pays to opt for those that are more expensive but when it comes to a budget wedding, there is nothing wrong with opting for someone who charges less - as long as you make sure they can offer what you want!
