Avoid the Risks of a Cheap Wedding Photographer

Wedding photography is something that most – if not all – couples want at the wedding? I know it’s definitely something that I want. Photographs hold all the memories that fade over time so you can look back on the day and remember with a smile. The problem with wedding photographers is that they can be expensive.

While I was looking around for wedding photographers, I found that they were coming up to between £2000 and £3000 for a full day and that didn’t even include the albums or copies of the photos! I would have to pay extra for that! However, I’ve managed to find someone to do the whole day of photography for between £300 and £500, depending on the type of album my partner and I end up choosing, perfect for my budget wedding.

How did I do it?

As you know from my previous post, I went to a friend who is taking a photography degree at university. She is getting into the wedding photography side and I asked her how much she was charging. Since she is still learning, she quoted the reasonable price with the warning that there are risks.

It turns out that my friend cannot do the wedding due to her baby being due around the same time as our big day but so I didn’t have to start looking at the expensive wedding photographers, she referred me onto some friends who would be willing to do it for the same price that she had quoted. The best thing is, now I get two wedding photographers for the price of one! They work as a duo, which means we can get photos of the hair and makeup while also snapping photos of the guests arrive to the church.

The Risks of Hiring a Student Photographer

Of course, there are risks to hiring a student wedding photographer. These were risks that my partner and I were willing to take but they are definitely not for everyone.

First of all, there is the risk that the equipment will not be good enough. As a student, photographers will not be able to get their hands on the most state-of-the-art equipment out there. However, it is not always about the equipment – it is about how it is used.

But how it is used comes with risks. Students are still learning; they are still getting the grip of different types of shots and when to get the best lighting. There are chances that the photos will turn out poor in quality.

Protect Yourself from the Risks

The good news is that you can protect yourself from these risks and I did that by asking to see samples of work; even when I was referred to others, I asked for samples to see the quality. This is the best thing that you can do as you get the chance to see other work and the styles that the wedding photographer will do.

Even if you are hiring a professional, it is always worth asking for samples. You may not like the wedding photographer’s style or the after-effects that are used, which will make you wish you went for someone else.

It is also worth asking for referrals or reviews from other people. Talk to the people that the photographers have done paid shoots for before and find out whether they recommend them.

Getting photography to match a budget wedding is not impossible but it can take time. There are chances that you do not know a student photographer, which means go to your local universities to find out whether they offer a photography course. This will give you a chance to meet some of the students and finding out whether they are interested in the paid work – no student in their right mind would turn this opportunity down!

Take your time and never rush this decision. You need to be happy with the wedding photographer so you are happy with your memories for the rest of your married days.
